Kinver & District Horticultural Society

Most of us felt quite exhausted after last month’s talk. Our speaker, Gordon Baillie, has been head gardener at Arley Hall and Gardens in Cheshire for the last seven years. He talked to us about his work at this historic garden that is open not just to the public for seven days of the week, but is also a wedding venue, hosts an annual garden festival, has school groups coming for hands on seed sowing lessons, outdoor theatre events and is in demand as a setting for film and TV. Over the year they have planted 3,000 narcissi bulbs, 5,000 tulips and have raised and planted a mind boggling 50,000 bedding plants. All this with just five full time gardeners and a small handful of volunteers! Even in the lead up to Christmas they’re kept going by making festive wreaths – no sitting down with a cup of hot cocoa for these guys!

In October we welcome Diana Parsons who will be talking about the amazing world of ‘Fungi’ and bringing lots of examples to show us.

Diana is Chairman and Secretary of the Worcestershire Fungus Group which was set up 17 years ago. It was formed to cater for the increasing number of people who share a fascination for the extensive range of fungi to be found in the county. Diana regularly leads foraging walks and will be taking us out on November 5 to Kingsford Park

Come and hear her on October 27, St Peter's Church Hall, Vicarage Drive, Kinver, DY7 6HJ
