SOMERLEYTON WI

President Olive Broadfield warmly welcomed two visitors to the October meeting of Somerleyton WI.

Flowers were presented to Pat Bourne and Angela Henderson on the occasion of their special birthdays.

The evening began with a talk by John Butterworth entitled ‘Hitting The Headlines.’ This was a riveting and fascinating talk with John taking us back to the days when he began his journalistic training in Plymouth via days editing newspapers in Yorkshire, Lancashire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire to his most recent exploits working on The Black Country Bugle.

Johns’ life as a journalist and editor had taken him to many interesting places and he told us of the many interesting people he had met along the way. He reiterated the importance of going with his gut feeling and being in the right place at the right time in order to get his ‘scoop’. He was thanked for his humorous, enlightening and thought provoking talk by Sue Jennings.

During refreshment time members took part in a picture quiz on the theme of ‘Headliners’ and this was won by Gill Munslow.

Olive Broadfield gave an overview of the recent Bewdley town walk, which several members had participated in.

Final arrangements were made for the group meeting which was to be hosted by Somerleyton and members were saddened to learn that this would be the last group meeting of the present group of institutes, due to the re-organisation of the make up of the Kidderminster Group.

Sue Jennings and Celia Muir would be attending the WFWI Annual Council Meeting at Malvern. Several members will be visiting The Rose Theatre to see ‘Anything Goes.’

Names were taken for the ever-popular Blakedown WI pantomime in December.

Members were reminded that our next meeting will be The Annual General Meeting and a fish and chip supper would be served.

New members are always welcome. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.30 at Cecilia’s Church Hoobrook.
