GIRLS from two Kidderminster schools kicked discrimination in football into touch as part of a campaign to encourage more females to try the sport.

St Mary's CE Primary School and St Oswald's CE Primary School pupils took part in the first Unite Against Discrimination football match, with the St Mary's team going on to win the trophy. It will now become an annual event.

Before the game, both girls and boys from the two schools learned about racism, religious discrimination, sexism and ageism. The event was support by Kidderminster Harriers who refereed a girls-only mini tournament with year fives from the two schools, while Wyre Forest District Council sports and development officer Dale Evans provided coaching to the boys.

Vanessa Halford, Broadwaters Safer Neighbourhood Team community support officer, said: "A national campaign called Kick It Out celebrates football's ability to unite people from all different backgrounds and walks of life. A lot of work has gone into promoting equality and diversity and ensuring football is an inclusive sport.

"We decided to take part this year by encouraging more girls into football. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part and we hope this will be the first of many annual events."

All of the players received certificates and Kick It Out's Unite Against Discrimination wristbands for taking part.
