KIND-hearted school staff will be climbing new heights to help fund a life-changing operation for a Kidderminster boy.

Teacher Rebecca Sabel and teaching assistants Claire Evans, Michael Farrand and Rachael Evans, of Chadsgrove School and Specialist Sports College in Catshill, Bromsgrove, will take on the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for their pupil Mason Jackson.

The 12-year-old, who has cerebral palsy, needs £15,000 for the muscle-loosening procedure Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR), which is not available on the NHS, and the fundraising foursome hope to give his campaign a financial boost.

Mrs Sabel, who has taught Mason since January, said: “We all wanted to contribute towards the appeal because we can see the huge difference the operation will have.

“Mason is such an enthusiastic person, who is always smiling and laughing and he is a real pleasure to teach.

“We all felt it was important to offer our help to him and his family.”

The team’s physical challenge, which will start next Monday at 5pm, involves reaching the summits of the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales in 24 hours.

Mrs Sabel, 26, who lives in Bromsgrove, added: “None of us have ever done anything quite like this before so we are somewhat out of our comfort zone.

“However, we completed a practice walk recently, which went really well, so we are now just excited to take on the challenge.”

Mason’s family , who expressed their thanks to the generous teachers, have raised £9,400 to date, which will cover the costs of the initial operation but still need £5,600 to fund essential physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and equipment.

They hope to increase their total at the Aggborough Stadium today, when Mason will be the match day mascot and supporters of the Harriers will be encouraged to donate to the cause.
