THE manager of Kidderminster’s Homebase store called her charity trek across the Great Wall of China a “phenomenal experience”.

Sharon Bainbridge took part in the challenge of walking one of the true wonders of the world as a way of raising money for Alzeimer’s Society.

“It was a phenomenal experience that brought people together for a cause close to the hearts of so many,” she said.

Joining 36 other members of staff from Homebase and Argos, Sharon took on the mammoth trek from Huangyaguan to Mutianyu.

Over six days, the explorers climbed countless steps, experienced breath-taking views and immersed themselves in the rich history and culture of The Great Wall.

So far, the trek has raised more than £135,000 to help people living with dementia stay in their own homes and be part of community life for longer.

Individually, Sharon had a fundraising target of £3,100, which she has since passed, and she also aimed to use the walk as a chance to get fit.

Sharon said: “My mother has Alzheimer’s disease so I’m thrilled to have raised so much for Alzheimer’s Society.

“Despite my sore feet, I’m delighted to have taken on the challenge knowing my fundraising will support people living with dementia.”

Together Alzheimer’s Society, Alzheimer Scotland and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland are Homebase and Argos’ charity partner for 2013 to 2015.

The money raised by staff and customers will fund Singing for the Brain groups, Dementia Cafes and Dementia Support services around the UK and Ireland.
