On Wednesday, March 25, Mike Abraham will talk to the Society on the Friends of Broadwaters. He will give the background to this volunteer group, its history, the work undertaken and their plans for the future. This is the story of a group of people whose efforts made a difference to their local environment for the benefit of all. His talk covers their story from the initial project, the subsequent work and improvements made through to the present day.

In 2001, Mike Abraham was one many who responded to Wyre Forest District Council’s plea to local residents to get involved in regenerating Broadwaters, which was very run down being among the 10% most deprived areas in the country. From that the Friends were formed, Heritage Lottery grant money obtained, and a disused Mill building was restored. Meeting monthly and with over 60 members they hold special events. In 2012 as part of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations the Queen granted special status to certain areas in England. The Friends have been awarded this status for Broadwaters and have received a commemorative plaque. They have also been awarded Green Pennants for the last 12 years only awarded throughout the country to the best parks and green spaces. They have also been winners in Britain in Bloom.

The meeting following will be on Wednesday April 1, when Mary Bodfish will give a talk entitled “As Easy as ABC “.

Meetings of the Society start at 19.30 and are held in St George's Annexe adjacent to St George's Church, Radford Avenue - off Coventry Street Kidderminster.

There is a small charge for visitors who are very welcome.
