ROTARY CLUB OF KIDDERMINSTER: The Soldiers, Sailors And Families Association [or SSAFA] , has seen many changes since its inauguration in 1885, not least the introduction of extending its support to airmen’s families in 1939 when it was re-named the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen’s Families Association. John Faulks of SSAFA painted a very comprehensive picture to Rotarians in Kidderminster at a recent weekly meeting.

By helping servicemen’s relatives to maintain their homes, for example, and being able to provide emergency accommodation the association can fulfil one of its aims “To maintain homes free from anxiety”. There are residential homes in Lancashire, Wimbledon and the Isle of Wight. By so doing, SSAFA can enable active servicemen to devote more energy to their duties. From early beginnings aimed at relieving poverty in the UK [before the existence of NHS benefits], thousands of volunteers now maintain a worldwide service across 14 countries helping, for example, with disabled equipment, personal budgeting against debt, and personal relationship problems [A local phone help line is available on 01905 21728.]
