KINDLY Kinver Rotarians have been looking less rotund after members shed pounds to raise pounds for needy children in India.

Eleven members and friends took part in a sponsored slim and raised over twice the amount they were expecting.

Rotary Club spokesman Mike Deathridge said: "We had hoped to raise around £1,000 from the slim but it went much better than expected thanks to the generosity of sponsors and the efforts of the slimmers involved."

In total, the slimmers shed almost ten stone between them during a six-week period and obtained £2,300 in sponsorship, while another £150 was raised from a competition among rotary members to guess the total weight lost.

The money will complete a Rotary project to buy a people carrier to provide transport for children attending school in the slum areas of Rohtak, a town 65 miles from Delhi.

A £500 donation from Stourbridge Rotary Club has also helped.

Kinver Rotary member Arvind Sharma, who visits Rohtak each year, said: "This vehicle will alleviate the need for children to walk many miles to and from school. Its impact on their education will be enormous and follows our gift of computer equipment to the school last year."
