Once again our members produced excellent exhibits for our Autumn Show. Fruit and vegetables in abundance, fantastic flowers and a good show in the domestic classes, but not many entrances in the flower arrangement category this year. The main prize winners were: Ron Marsh, John Knight, John Boswell, Steve Pickard, Mavis Philips and Mary Hodgins. The prize for heaviest weight of potatoes from just one seed potato was once again James Bundred with over 8lbs. The Jean Oliver Prize for the least weight went to Ian Gapper.

“Bees” were the subject of our September meeting, and most interesting it was too. Mr. Phil Healey brought along some of his “Wolverhampton Honey” and quite a few tools of the trade that a beekeeper requires. He explained how he got hooked on the subject. He has fifty hives You can get up to scattered around the local area and has also helped to set up a bee farm, or apiary, in the Gambia to find work for local people.

He explained how a hive works and the various jobs of the drones. You can get up to 100lbs of honey from a good hive. He thinks some of the best honey is produced near to towns. He told us some of the best plants to grow to attract bees.

In October we shall be hosting the last round of the “Morgan Shield”
