KINVER’S MP Gavin Williamson has been appointed Chief Whip in a Government reshuffle by new Prime Minister Theresa May.
The Rt Honourable Mr Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, was formerly David Cameron’s Parliamentary Private Secretary – and last year was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council.
The 40-year-old, who became an MP at the 2010 General Election, replaces Mark Harper who had held the Chief Whip’s post for 12 months.
Mr Williamson said his new role as Chief Whip (Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury) was “unexpected” and he was “very surprised and very delighted” to have been appointed.
The Chief Whip is responsible for ensuring party members attend and vote in Parliament - and that they tow the party line.
