‘The History of Bowketts of Tenbury’ was described by Roger Bowkett, the grandson of the founder, at the group’s March meeting.

Mr Bowkett’s grandfather had purchased a butcher’s shop in Tenbury in 1908 and the business moved to the Square in 1919 with Roger’s father working the shop from the age of 12, and Roger and his brother joining the business in their late teens.

Roger’s father had the foresight to erect an abattoir which supplied meat to the local butchers, and to be one of the first to have a deep freezer installed in the shop.

The famous Bowkett’s Pork Pies started to be made between the world wars and are still a thriving part of the business.

Despite the economic ups and downs through the years, Roger was delighted to report that the shop continues to flourish, now using NISA brand foods, and the family tradition is maintained as his daughters are now part of the management team. A question and answer session was a most enjoyable end to his interesting talk.

Pauline Blumer has arranged two outings for the summer – to Hampton Court gardens, near Leominster in June, and to Glansevern Hall near Powys in August. Names are now being taken.

President, Val Evans, reminded everyone to support the Trading Stall each month, as this was a good fund-raiser.

Next month’s meeting on Monday, April 12 starting at 7.30 pm in Mamble Village Hall will hear Mrs Louvain Beer’s talk “Honey, I’ve poisoned your lunch!”
