At the July meeting, a beautifully appliquéd banner, showing the Tenbury Group of Institutes in the 1950 – 1960’s, was on display.

It had been in the safe keeping of the late Mrs Molly Baldwin, a former president and long-time member of the Institute, and has been returned to the Institute by her daughter Mrs Ann Park, together with old record books and other memorabilia.

Ten members had enjoyed a visit to Hampton Court Gardens near Leominster in June and Joan Popham reported on the Celebrity Lunch with Dr Donald Hunt OBE at The Hundred House which she and Myra Godwin had attended. Dr Hunt was formerly the organist and master of the choristers at Worcester Cathedral and his subject was Jerome Kern, one of his favourite composers.

Shirley Noble’s talk was ‘The Lives of Edward and Mrs Simpson’. She described in detail their individual lives, how they first met, their subsequent romance and marriage. Their social life was of great importance, even when they lived in the Bahamas in the early war years. Their later years were spent in France. They are buried together but Mrs Simpson is not named on the grave.

The August 9 meeting is the pre-booked outing to Glansevern and members are asked to meet in Tenbury Swimming Pool car park at 11am prompt.

The next meeting in Mamble Village Hall will be on September 13, starting at 7.30 pm, and Anthony Gray will talk about Jerome K Jerome.
