THE 89th annual Stourport Carnival was described as the best ever by organisers after thousands of people ascended onto the streets of the town.

Visitors to the event were able to enjoy the land and river parades, live music, fireworks and the crowing of this year’s carnival queen, princess and rosebud.

The day kicked off with a land parade of marching bands, decorated floats, golf buggies, go karts and walkers, who passed through the town’s streets to the riverside carnival field.

Awards were given out on the day for the best decorate floats in the parade as well as best dressed window display.

Winners in the various parade categories included the Mid Severn Sea Scouts, Monday Night Group, Lickhill Manor Caravan Park, Stourport Rugby Club, Four Acres Caravan Park and Racheal Rudd and Debbie Broomfield.

While in the best dressed window competition, which attracted more than 30 entries, taking the top prize was the newly opened Clock Gallery, in New Street.

During the afternoon, the carnival court, made up of queen Mary Newman, princess Halle Griffiths and rosebud Darcie Holmes, were crowned.

Once the formalities had finished, the queen took her place on the first of the riverboat parades which featured a flypast from a local micro light club before an illuminated evening parade down the river and a finale of fireworks to close the event.

Pete Roberts, carnival committee chairman, said: “This year’s carnival is probably the best we’ve ever had.

“About five to seven thousand people were in the town and everyone who attended or took part this year, were a great credit to the town of Stourport.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took part and made this year better than ever.”

Stourport mayor, Councillor Cliff Brewer, said: “I wish to say a big thank you to all the residents of Stourport and the large number of visitors who have made our annual carnival such a wonderfully successful day.

“The carnival committee, lead by Pete Roberts, have put in a lot of hard work and endeavour to make the day a truly memorable event.

“We also owe our gratitude to all the participants in the land and river parades who have ensured the main part of our carnival was so entertaining.

“I look forward to next year’s event, which I am sure will be another resounding success.”

Organisers are now appealing to Stourport groups and organisations to apply to receive a share of the money raised at the carnival.
