A STOURPORT teenager has been awarded with two prestigious sports volunteering awards after giving up more than 400 hours of her own time.

The netball volunteering which Sophie Jancey, 16, has carried out in her community has been recognised on both a local level as well as on the national stage.

She was first nominated for the regional Young Volunteer Award at the Goalden Globes held by Netball West Midlands in Walsall on June 20.

After winning the regional award, Sophie was invited to attend the National Goalden Globes, held at Sheffield City Hall on September 20, where she also took home a Pass on Your Passion award – the first volunteer from the region to achieve.

The year 12 student at Stourport High School and Sixth Form Centre, said: “I am delighted to have won both awards especially National Young Netball Volunteer, which was completely unexpected.”

The Pass on Your Passion award is awarded to a young person aged 12 to 24 who has completed 400 hours volunteering in a two year period in a netball related role.

As part of her 400 hours, Sophie has volunteered at a number of events including the Worcestershire School Games, school and club netball fixtures and also coaching and umpiring at a local and county level.

Sophie has also volunteered at several international fixtures as flag bearer and as ball patrol.

She added: “I started volunteering after becoming an umpire and, although I play netball, coaching and umpiring others was another way of getting involved and supporting others who play.”

As well as her netball volunteering, Sophie recently featured in The Shuttle as part of the group of Stourport High School students who recently returned from a sports volunteering trip to Jamaica.

Vicky Shipton, Sophie’s mother, said: “Netball is Sophie's passion and she still continued to be involved despite having lots of revision and exams during the past year.

“She has worked very hard and I am extremely proud of her for getting recognised for her commitment.”
