PUPILS from a Stourport school recently visited a local arable farm and were given a detailed perspective on how to give the environment a helping hand.

Mike and Paul Southall, from Norchard Farm near Hartlebury, gave the year 4 students of Burlish Park Primary School a guided tour of their 750 acre farm.

The children learnt how pumpkins, purple sprouting broccoli and asparagus grow and are harvested before being packed and sent to supermarkets.

They also discussed how buying from local producers helps the local economy as well as reducing the carbon emissions being released into the atmosphere.

Rhian Duckworth, year 4 teacher, said: “This was a wonderful experience for the children, as many of them don’t get the chance to see produce growing in the fields and many children haven’t previously considered how our food gets to the supermarkets.

“When you then also add the valuable lesson learned, that when we buy local produce we reduce the number of food miles and therefore cut harmful emissions, this really is an important visit.”
