BUDDING ornithologists have been making bird boxes for their school grounds.

Pupils at Burlish Park Primary School, Stourport, took part in National Nest Box Week last week and were busy putting up homemade bird boxes.

The aim of bird box week was to encourage as many people as possible to put up boxes and help protect garden birds.

It is estimated that nearly six million bird boxes have been put up in gardens across the UK since the scheme began in 1997.

Lynda Williams, leader of Burlish Park’s Forest School, said: “Our children recently took part in the Big Schools’ Birdwatch organised by the RSPB. They were really interested and keen to find out about birds.

“Local resident Maurice Sandoz kindly volunteered to come in and work with the children and help them build some bird boxes and encourage wildlife in the school grounds.

“They really enjoyed building the bird boxes and learnt about the importance of siting bird boxes in the correct situation.

“The children have all benefited immensely from being involved in this project.”

National Nest Box Week is organised by the British Trust for Ornithology.
