At the last meeting Geoff Shaw described his involvement with the Burlish Camp Project His interest in the Camp started after he took parties on walks through the site. The Camp, built during WW2, once covered 105 acres.

After clearing masses of undergrowth Geoff and his team, with the help of old maps and photos, have managed to identify the site and use of many of the buildings.

Exactly what went on there is the subject of many myths and misinterpretation.

Geoff believes it’s original purpose was to prepare American troops for the D-Day landings.

One key event was a visit by General Paton when he delivered one of his famous “Blood and guts” speeches.

After the troops left the site it became a hospital for wounded American servicemen.

Pauline reported that she has had an offer of funding for the “Blue Plaque” project from the Town Centre Working Party.

The “Friends of Lickhill Park” are hoping to obtain funds from the Lottery to make improvements at the park.

At the next meeting on Thursday, April 10 Brian Draper will be giving his personal view of Ironbridge, a popular local attraction.

Meetings are held at the Elizabeth Mills Centre, New Street, starting at 7.30pm.

Admission for non members is £2.
