Lizzie Hill gave and interesting talk on the Welsh Gate and Sandy Bank area of Bewdley.

Situated just outside the the town’s old Welsh Gate it was one of the most deprived areas of Bewdley.

Overcrowded housing and a poor water supply meant living there was hard.

Arguments among the residents were common as extracts from the “Berrows Worcester Journal” bear witness too.

Some residents even made straw effigies of neighbours who upset them, later burning the effigies outside that person’s house.

The talk ended with her thoughts on the belief that Bewdley grew up around the “Old Town Hall” pub on Wyre Hill.
