A GROUP in Kidderminster which works with young people to increase their confidence put on a morning training session to mark its new sports initiative.

Our Way Sports, an initiative run by Our Way, works with young people through sporting activities, helping them develop their social skills as well as sporting ones.

Chris Sloan, a volunteer with Our Way, is also a volunteer sports coach and helped to set up the initiative.

“’We work with people with disabilities and learning difficulties as well as mainstream and our ultimate aim is to include anyone who is interested in sports, regardless of their abilities,” he said. “I felt I had something to offer this set-up and so I chose to volunteer.

“The volunteers for Our Way do a great job in assisting the young people that come to all the activities that Our Way run.

“We have a great team ethic here and we support one another. That's what makes it such an enjoyable place to be.”

He invited Wyre Forest MP Mark Garnier to the morning training session to stress the importance of such community projects to him.

Mr Sloan said: “Mark was very receptive to what we had to say about the project and giving young people with learning difficulties and disabilities sporting opportunities and choices. Mark kindly awarded our players with trophies for their efforts in the football.

“We are pleased to say we are now working with Mark to look at ways in which we can obtain future funding to take this project forward.”

The group has been liaising with the Worcester Wolves basketball team to expand their sporting selections as well as looking for new members, over the age of 14, to join the group.
