STUDENTS from Wyre Forest are being urged to beware of catching a lifelong hangover as they enjoy themselves during "Freshers Week".

Worcestershire Health and Care NHS is appealing to new students to make sure they do not put themselves at risk of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) - or the need for emergency contraception.

The health trust says, if they are concerned they might have put themselves at risk, they should get tested at their closest sexual health clinic.

Kate Wilson, health promotion specialist at Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, said: “Whether you’re a Fresher student or you are going back to university, Freshers’ week is an exciting time and being away from home can bring a certain sense of freedom.

"Whilst Freshers’ Week lasts only a few days, STIs such as herpes can last a lifetime.

"This campaign is about encouraging students to stay safe while having fun and enjoying this new sense of freedom.”

The Trust runs services from seven sites across the county, as well as the "Time 4U" service which caters for young people under 21, based in schools and community settings. Services can be found at colleges across Worcestershire, including the University of Worcester.

They provide contraception, emergency contraception, chlamydia testing, STI testing and treatment, free condoms, pregnancy testing, sexual health advice and counselling.

Students can find their nearest service by visiting www.playinitsafe.co.uk or calling 0800 783 2936.

Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust will be at the University of Worcester’s Freshers’ Fair tomorrow from 10am to 4pm.
