TEENAGE writers in Wyre Forest are being encouraged to take part in the search to find Worcestershire’s next Young Poet Laureate.

This year's Word Up competition is open to all 13 to 19-year-olds who live, go to school, college, university or a youth club in the county.

It requires the writers to submit two poems, one on the subject of Heroes and Inspiration and another on a subject of their choice.

Holly Perrett, the current Young Poet Laureate, said she has enjoyed her experience, which has seen her writing, performing and enthusing young people across the county.

“I have had a fantastic time as Worcestershire’s Young Poet Laureate,” said the 19-year-old.

“I have been invited to perform at a wide variety of events, which have really opened doors for me.

“I was extremely lucky to perform at the prestigious Wenlock Poetry Festival earlier this year, which was an amazing experience and I would totally recommend anyone interested to enter this year’s competition.

“Who knows where it might lead you?”

Worcestershire County Councillor Lucy Hodgson, cabinet member for localism and communities, said: “The Word Up project has been extremely successful over the last few years and we’re looking forward to being dazzled by poetry from Worcestershire’s young people once again this year.

“Along with the live grand final at The Hive on November 30, there’s also an opportunity for poets to take part in a performance poetry workshop on Friday, October 31.”

This year’s competition again includes the involvement of professional poets Spoz and Matt Windle, who are keen to show that poetry can be an exciting way of expressing thoughts and emotions.

Entries to this year’s Word Up can be made until the deadline of midnight on Saturday, November 9, by visiting worcestershire.gov.uk/wordup For more information call Natalie McVey on 07876 144905, or Steve Wilson on 01905 765754.
