Severn Valley Railway (SVR) is celebrating another landmark in its illustrious history after its trains notched up two million miles on the rails.
The milestone figures, which date back to the railway’s formative days in 1967, were discovered during a routine review of the SVR’s mileage charts.
At the end of 2013, the total mileage for all 46 years added up to 2,135,470 – the equivalent of going to the moon and back more than four times.
Ian Walker, SVR’s works manager, said: “The figures really represent a terrific achievement for our current fleet of locomotives, which has so far operated tremendously well with very few breakdowns and mainly just routine washouts and maintenance needing attention.”
In the railway’s early years, trains averaged less than 6,000 miles, now, the average mileages are nearer 55 to 58,000.
At the top of the charts, which included guest trains and those no longer based on the railway, was the Stanier 8F No 48773 which clocked up 151,805 miles on the historic tracks.
