AFTER the success of the previous year's event, the annual Severn Valley Railway (SVR) Diesel Enthusiast's Gala returns this weekend.

The gala, which organisers described as “one of the country’s most popular preserved railway diesel events”, takes place between today and Saturday (October 4).

Featuring a line-up of visiting engines, including several prestigious guests, the event will also see its regular train service throughout the day continue into the evening.

Headlining this year’s gala are two members of the Deltic Class – once the most powerful diesel trains in the world – which transformed travel on the East Coast Main Line in the 1960’s after replacing steam engines.

The Royal Highland Fusilier, No. 55019, is making a return visit to the SVR and will be joined by classmate Alycidon, D9009.

Clare Gibbard, SVR’s marketing and communications manager, said: “The Diesel Enthusiasts’ Gala is traditionally the one event each year where steam takes back seat and diesel locomotives are the main attraction.

“Many of which are now over 50 years old themselves, recalling yet another era now passed into history when diesel locomotive hauled trains were a common site across the country.

“The SVR will show off what it does best – intensive services, late evening running and lots of variety.

“This year is no different and we are extremely excited about the mix of visiting locos.”

The railway’s own diesel fleet will be represented at the gala by Defiance – subject to completion of repairs – and Western Courier, while visiting trains include Valiant, Western Champion and Atlantic Conveyor.

Organisers also hope that a collection of the non-operational trains will be available for cab visits at Kidderminster Station during the event.
