WYRE Forest residents are being urged by Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service to stay safe this bonfire night.

As well as the November 5 celebrations, there are various firework displays taking place across the district throughout the week.

Station Commander Alan Haley said: “We encourage people to go to an organised event as this is by far the safest option.

“We do recognise that many people will holding their own parties and we want to remind them of some simple safety tips to help avoid injury or damage.”

Firework safety tips from the fire service include: buying fireworks from a reputable supplier; don’t drink if setting off fireworks; keep them in a closed metal box, take them out one at a time and always follow instructions carefully.

Advice also includes to always supervise children, don’t let off fireworks late at night and keep pets indoors.

The service also gave advice when building bonfires: build it well clear of buildings, fences and hedges; before lighting, check there are no children or animals inside and that hazardous items such as aerosols and fireworks have not been thrown onto it and never use a flammable substance to get it going.
