Elizabeth I provided the topic for speaker Dr Gillian White at the October meeting at Blakedown Parish Rooms.

Dr White formally worked for the National Trust as curator and collections manager at Hardwicke Hall in Derbyshire.

She has an interest in all things Elizabethan and since leaving the Trust she has obtained a PHD following her study of 16th century English visual arts. She now works as a freelance lecturer, including at Oxford and Leicester universities.

Dr White said most people were familiar with the image of Elizabeth I and she went onto show how artists depicted the monarch in a world of symbolism. Artists addressed the issues of an aging unmarried monarch with no heir.

Dr White illustrated her talk with images of various paintings which underlined her theme.

Her lively presentation showed her research and scholarship, interpreting the symbolism of the portraits to which she referred.
