SHOPPERS were surprised when a barbershop quartet and a mariachi band jumped out of a giant purple vending machine.

The machine, which was the height of a double-decker bus, was set up at the Homebase store in Elgar Retail Park, Worcester.

Hundreds of free prizes were distributed to shoppers who swiped to win on the Nectar Thank You Machine, pictured.

Brockhill resident Shelly O’Bren, who was the lucky winner of easyJet flights, said: “I’m over the moon with my thank you surprise, what an unexpected treat.

"We’ll be planning a lovely family trip away somewhere hot for next year."

Other Worcester families to be wowed by the machine included Ronkswood residents Gary Hipkiss and his six-year-old son Daniel, and Tracy Evans and her children Casey and Joel.

Simon Webb from Warndon Villages won £100 worth of Homebase vouchers, while Merriman Hill's Cindy Hencher also had a slice of luck.

Big enough to hold over 1,700 bunches of flowers, 5,300 boxes of chocolates or even two fully grown adult elephants, the gigantic 13ft machine became the centre of attention when it appeared at the store overnight on Friday and stunned shoppers on Saturday.

Gifts given out during the day included treats and flowers from Sainsbury’s, Eurostar tickets, easyJet flights, eBay vouchers, Pizza Express gift cards, Vue cinema tickets, Go Ape tickets and Nectar points.

The massive machine was created to celebrate the millions of bonus points Nectar card holders can swipe to win throughout October during a month-long promotion.

Homebase customers can win instant prizes of up to 1million Nectar points when they use their card in store before Friday (Oct 24).

The machine's day at Homebase is part of a national tour which will see the vending machine delight shoppers around the country.
