SCENTS of chestnuts and mulled wine are in the air as Worcester's annual Victorian Fayre got underway today (Thursday).

The popular fayre, which signals the start of the festive season in the Faithful City, began officially in its traditional way with a procession from the Guildhall in the centre of Worcester tonight.

The town crier led the parade through the town, followed by carolers from the Cathedral, local dignitaries and visitors from overseas.

They trailed through the streets followed by onlookers and past stalls selling gifts, festive food and refreshments, before ending at the carousel in the Corn Market car park.

Here crowds gathered to join in the Christmas Carols and the fayre was officially opened.

The Dean of Worcester, the Very Reverend Peter Atkinson, welcomed everyone to the event before blessing the fayre.

Mike Ashton, chief executive of fayre organisers, Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, also welcomed guests.

"We are really proud as a chamber to be organising this event for the second time," he said.

"We have got people here from the city, from the county and from a long way away. I hope you all come back to Worcester in the future because there is a lot to see but for the next few days we hope you enjoy the market and get the feeling of Christmas and this great city."

He was followed by the Mayor of Worcester Alan Amos, who pronounced the fayre open and ordered everyone to smile and be happy.

He said: "Welcome to Worcester's finest tradition. Enjoy yourself and while you are spending your money have something to eat.

"There is music, there's entertainment and there's all sorts of things going on. From now on we have to remember Christmas is around the corner. We have to smile and be happy."

Cllr Amos then enjoyed the traditional ride on the carousel in his full regalia alongside Worcester MP Robin Walker and county dignitaries.

The Worcester Victorian Fayre will run all weekend coming to a close on Sunday.
