AN elderly man was injured during a crash at an “accident blackspot” which left his car on its side.

The male was “medically trapped” inside his smashed silver Nissan Micra, but firefighters were able to cut part of the boot and rear window to access the casualty.

A spinal board was used to get the pensioner, who was cushioned by the deployed driver’s airbag, out of the car before ambulance staff transported him to hospital.

The crash took place in Droitwich Road in Feckenham on Friday (March 27) at about 3.40pm.

No other vehicles were involved.

The road was closed while the Nissan Micra, which hit a wall during the crash, was made safe.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews from Redditch and Bromsgrove attended the scene alongside West Midlands Ambulance Service and West Mercia Police.

Their efforts were co-ordinated using the new joint emergency services interoperability programme (JESIP), which involves closer partnership working between the three services.

Watch commander Dan Mourino, of Redditch Fire Station, said: “It worked really well and was an excellent example of team work.”

He added that residents had informed him that the crash site is a notorious “accident blackspot”.
