A HEREFORD couple are this week in Greece to begin the first step in their dream of becoming parents for the first time.

Kirsty and Kyle Morgan flew out to Athens on Monday to undergo fertility treatment after their only round of IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) treatment on the NHS was unsuccessful.

The couple, who live off Holme Lacy Road in South Wye, are unable to conceive naturally and faced a bill of a least £7,000 for private treatment in the UK - about double the cost in Greece.

They are in the Mediterranean country for a fortnight during which time Mrs Morgan will undergo an egg transplant in the hope of conceiving.

The couple will have to wait until the end of the month to know if this round of treatment has been successful.

"The last few days, we've both been really nervous," said Mr Morgan, who is 31.

"Thankfully, though, everything has gone smoothly since being over here.

"Kirsty has had an ultrasound, blood test and injections. Egg collection will take place towards the end of the week before being transplanted."

They have been trying for a baby for five years.

As previously reported by the Hereford Times, Mr and Mrs Morgan said the success rate at the clinic they are visiting is very good.

Should this round of IVF treatment be successful, the couple plan to hand over the money they had been collecting for a second IVF cycle to another Hereford couple struggling to conceive.

They have also campaigned for a level playing field for patients receiving IVF treatment on the NHS.

Herefordshire residents are allowed only one IVF cycle, but in nearby Cinderford, for instance, it is three.

To fund the trip, they have raised about £5,500 through a series of events including a recent cabaret night at the Hereford Welsh Club which collected more than £1,000.
