PEOPLE with learning disabilities who cannot benefit from mainstream books are being helped by libraries across Dudley borough.

Multi-sensory ‘Bag Books’, which tell tales to the reader interactively through actions and emotions rather than pictures and words, are now available to borrow from local libraries.

Each line of a story is accompanied by some sort of multi-sensory element, such as something to feel, something that makes a sound, or something that smells.

Councillor Rachel Harris, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “It’s wonderful to see people interacting with different elements of a story.

“The books can be used with children, teenagers and adults and we also run activities at libraries using the books as well as sessions at special schools or with groups.”

Bag Books is a UK charity providing tactile and multi-sensory books to people with learning disabilities. Individuals and groups can borrow the books from libraries free of charge.
