WORK on new multi-million pound retirement homes on the site of a former Stourport primary school is beginning to take shape.

The land where Tan Lane Infants School – and later Stourport First School – stood for decades from 1897, is currently being transformed by Bromford into 60 retirement living apartments for over 55’s.

Construction at School Gardens, which began in December 2015, reached a new phase last week with the brick and block work now pressing ahead following the laying of the foundations and creation of the central steel structure.

The £10.5 million project in Stourport will feature a range of one and two bedroom apartments for independent living as well as offering residents the option of specialist support and care tailored to their needs. There will also be options for renting or purchasing.

Landscaped gardens will complement the site and customers will also be able to enjoy a gym, hair and beauty salon, café, lounge and an activities room hosting regular community events.

A show home is due to open in January 2017 and as progress on the development moves forward, the various on-site facilities will create a number of job opportunities for local businesses.

Penny Downing, Bromford’s director of development, said: “Our retirement living homes are increasingly popular as they offer customers the opportunity to live in a lively and vibrant community where they can really retain their independence; safe in the knowledge that support is available if they need it.

“We will welcome the local community, friends and family to become part of this next chapter in Tan Lane’s rich history and help our customers living in this new development to achieve their goals and aspirations.

“Construction work is very much on track and it is fantastically exciting to see this building gradually rising from the ground and beginning to take shape.”

Councillor Sally Chambers, Wyre Forest District Council cabinet member for health, well-being and housing, said: “Wyre Forest District Council fully supports this scheme as it will bring much needed older people’s housing to Stourport. There is a need for this type of housing across the district.

“The beauty of this scheme is that it will also create new employment opportunities for local people.”

Councillor Sheila Blagg, Worcestershire County Council cabinet member for adult social care, added: “Living in a retirement scheme like this is an excellent way for people to maintain independence for longer, to avoid social isolation and to have the reassurance of knowing support is on site should it be needed.

“The development of such schemes supports the council’s extra care strategy and we welcome it.”
