A MALVERN school will close for a day after a teaching union said it would strike over funding, pay and conditions.

Members of the NUT will strike on Tuesday, July 5 to try and put pressure on Secretary of State Nicky Morgan to increase funding, guarantee terms and conditions in all types of schools and resume negotiations on teacher contracts.

The union says national pay and conditions need protecting for all schools - maintained and academies - or teachers and children will suffer.

The Chase School in Malvern has said the strike will mean it will close to it's 1,500 pupils on Tuesday.

Headteacher Richard Jacobs wrote to parents saying: "The NUT forms the largest union within the school and if all members were to be on strike we would not be able to ensure the safety of our students during the day.

"It is with regret, therefore, that I have to inform you that the school will be closed to all students on the day."

Worcester MP Robin Walker, who is Mrs Morgan's parliamentary private secretary, said: "I don't think striking is ever really the way to resolve a situation of this sort.

"We should make sure there are talks and make sure we fund schools properly.

"I've been pushing for the funding we need to get that delivered.

"That's what will make the difference in the long term.

"If the school's don't have funding there will always be pressure."

However, he warned schools would have to accept the settlement they had been offered.

He said: "The NHS has been made the top priority. Schools are the next on the list in terms of getting a no cash reduction and I think that's the best deal they will get."
