BIG-HEARTED Halesowen Tennis Club members marked the summer solstice by playing continuously for 12 hours and raising more than £300 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Matches began at 4am and continued uninterrupted until late in the afternoon.

Hot breakfast was provided, and a celebration barbecue rounded off the day.

Jackie Surplice, chairman of the tennis club, Manor Way, said: "We had members aged 10 to 70 taking part in this special event.

"It was a great way to mark the summer solstice and to raise funds for such a good cause at the same time."

Dave Clarkson, voluntary fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital and member of the Club, said: "Halesowen Tennis Club’s help for the Children’s Hospital is greatly appreciated.

"The funds will go towards providing vital medical support for children and young people."

Halesowen Tennis Club will hold an Open Day on Sunday 3 July, 12pm - 4pm.

All are welcome to this event, from beginners to experienced players.

Visitors will be able to play tennis, join in fun events and talk to members and coaches about opportunities at the Club. Special activities for children will be part of the programme. Free racquets and tennis balls will be provided.

Jackie Surplice, chairman of the club, said: ‘We are looking forward to a great day. It is a super chance to come and see the Club and try out playing tennis here.’

Mike Lambert, Membership Secretary, said: ‘Many visitors end up playing here on a regular basis. We hope that those who come on 3 July will be similarly inspired to take up this great sport.’

Halesowen Tennis Club, which already has nearly 200 members aged from 3 to 83, is situated next to the Athletic and Cycling Club off Manor Way, Halesowen.
