A GROUP of fundraisers raised £736 in just four hours by selling tea and cakes at Ilmington Manor, near Stratford.
The gardens surrounding the stately home were open to the public, as part of the National Garden Scheme, and fundraisers from the Children’s Society were providing the refreshments.
Volunteer Karen Gaymond from Armscote has been rallying support for the event for the last 14 years, and says this year’s bake sale was one of the most enjoyable yet.
She said: “This year was such a great atmosphere that really drew the community together. Young people give their time to serve tables, and a faithful team of villagers spend hours washing up - all to help raise money for a great cause. My committee friends Rose Salt and Wendy Nelson also put in an incredible effort to make the event such a success - it’s a real joint effort.
“During the build-up, we beg, steal and borrow from as many volunteers as we can find - and so many people spend hours baking delicious home-made treats. This year, the stars of the show were some amazing meringues and delicious coffee-walnut sponge, which sold out almost instantly. "
Roseann Thompson, fundraising manager for the Children’s Society, said: “It’s so wonderful that individuals like Karen give up their valuable time to gather volunteers and raise money for our work. I know the Ilmington event was the result of many people’s hard work, and I’d like to thank everyone who baked, poured tea and cleared tables to raise so much money to help change young people’s lives.”
