FUNDING from the Tesco's "Bags of Help" scheme could help to enhance and refurbish a number of public areas in and around Ledbury.

Tesco's has a grant fund for community use from the money raised through the purchase of its carrier bags, and the town council plans to apply for a grant.

A council "task and finish" group will prepare the application; and if successful the money could be used for picnic tables, a new shelter and lighting on the Recreation Ground, and also for new benches and bins at the so-called "Cricket Pitch" area of open space in the Dog Hill Wood beauty spot. This wood is owned by Ledbury Town Council.

Money could also be sourced for the refurbishment of the town's war memorial, in the High Street.

In recent years, concern has been expressed by some town councillors that the war memorial appears to be sinking slightly, into the pavement

Nothing as yet is set in stone, concerning the grant application bid, and yet more ideas could be considered.

Speaking at last week's full town council meeting in the Ledbury Community Hall, Cllr Martin Eager, chairman of the town's environment and leisure committee said that plans had been moving "at a bit of a rush", and he added: "We are going to talk to local residents , including children, to find out exactly what they want, and then get proper quotations and a proper bid in."

Cllr Liz Harvey, who is both a town and a county councillor made a pleas that, in considering putting together the proposal, the town council "should avail itself of information that is in the town plan".

The recently completed plan is one of the cornerstones of future development in Ledbury, alongside the Neighbourhood Plan, which is still being developed, and Herefordshire Council's Core Strategy.

The Town Plan in particular deals with maintaining and improving the quality of life and services in Ledbury.
