A MALVERN-based youth orchestra is celebrating its 25th birthday next week.

The National Schools Symphony Orchestra, which has grown into a robust family of three performing ensembles, attracts more than 150 talented young instrumentalists from all over the UK to Malvern College each year.

John Madden, the orchestra's artistic director, said: “Providing an intensive and high-quality orchestral experience for young players has always been at the heart of what we do. As we celebrate a significant milestone during an unsettled time in music education, we are thrilled to announce an exciting 12-month programme of activities.”

The main orchestra will give the opening performance at this year’s international youth orchestra festival, WOWFest, at Wells Cathedral on Thursday, July 12.

“Opening for WOWFest is a real testament to our growing reputation. We’re also delighted to see a number of NSSO alumni currently playing in the National Youth Orchestra - this demonstrates the importance of the formative experience we offer talented young players," said Mr Madden.

And all three NSSO orchestras will be performing at Malvern Theatres on Sunday, July 15. Tickets are £15 (£8 concessions) available from the box office on 01684 892277.

College head Antony Clark said: “Malvern College is delighted to be hosting NSSO in this important year which marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of the orchestra. We wish all the participants a sense of fulfilment as they develop their love of music. May you make friends through playing together in what we hope will be a really special week for everybody linked to NSSO.”
