For the first time in many years the churchwardens at Pershore Abbey have an unusual problem – they need a volunteer accountant to help them run the finances.

When local chartered accountant Garth Raymer died in June, he left the abbey finances in good order, covering expenses and payments for weddings, funerals, concerts and maintenance.

“We’re coping well,” says churchwarden Bill Newman, “but I’m a retired farmer and need someone with financial skills to help.”

Hundreds of volunteers run many of the activities at the abbey, with several local organisations using the buildings – all of which involve donations and fees.

“We don’t need a church member,” said the vicar, Rev Claire Lording, “just someone who can keep our financial affairs presentable.

“We have a finance team who cover most funding activities but we need an honorary treasurer to lead us and give oversight.”
