A CENTENARIAN who recently became the oldest person in the UK has celebrated her latest milestone birthday.

Grace Jones, of Pegasus Court, and known to her friends as Amazing Grace, celebrated her 112th birthday on Sunday, (September 16).

Mrs Jones, who was born in 1906, has lived to see five monarchs and 21 prime ministers., and survived two world wars. In her 20s she owned a millinery factory in her home city of Liverpool where she met her husband, Leonard, a chief engineer. They had one daughter, Deirdre McCarthy, and spent most of their married life moving around the country - 28 times in total - and lived in Devonshire, Cheshire and North Wales. Later they moved to Mickleton to live near their daughter. Since 2005 she has lived at Pegasus Court, in Broadway.

Speaking about her life, Mrs Jones said: "The best memory was when I married my husband. He was a true gentleman, the son of a parson. We were always together and we loved one another."

The Broadway resident's tips for living a long life are to avoid anxiety, stay active, enjoy good company, and she recommends taking a drop of whiskey in bed with a drop of water.

Her daughter, Deirdre McCarthy, said: “She is a wonderful lady. She is loved by everybody and the qualities of her character, kindness, friendship and enthusiasm for life make her a very positive and inspirational person."

Mrs Jones celebrated her latest landmark birthday with a special tea party where she was joined by family and friends.

The country's previous oldest person Olive Boar, who was born in September 1904, died aged 113 in August. French woman Jeanne Louise Calment is currently the world's oldest person, recently celebrating her 122th birthday.
