More Green Party councillors in the council chamber in Worcester’s Guildhall would allow members from the other parties to be ‘greener’, claims Louise Griffiths.

Ms Griffiths was out in the sunshine yesterday with the co-leader of the national Green party Jonathan Bartley, who had come to Worcester to support her, the party’s candidate in Battenhall in the forthcoming elections to Worcester City Council.

Mr Bartley said: “When Louise is elected, as I hope she will be, she will be the youngest councillor on the council, and one of the few women.

“The council needs her perspective as a younger person and it definitely needs more women.”

Mr Bartley had chosen The Hill Avenue in which to canvass, and while on a sunny Friday afternoon, some of the residents of the six or seven houses displaying boards or posters in support of Ms Griffith were not in, they chatted to Joy Cull.

Mr Bartley said that more Green councillors would work to improve provisions for walking and cycling and public transport in the city and its suburbs and added: “The one thing the city doesn’t need is more cars on its streets.”

If elected Ms Griffiths would become just the third Green councillor on the authority of 35 members, but she said that extra presence would make a major difference: “With three councillors it means we would have a Green on every political committee. And our presence on those committees allows other members to be more green, we encourage them to make better decisions.

“I also want to put more pressure on the county council to reverse the cuts it’s making to services.”

There are five candidates battling in Battenhall Ward in this election.

Alongside Ms Griffiths, candidates are:

John Butterfield – UKIP; Saiful Islam – Labour; Karen Lawrance – Liberal Democrat and sitting councillor Steve Mackay - Conservative.
