WYRE Forest youngsters have been stepping out of the classroom and into the great outdoors with a learning programme developed by schools in Denmark.

Children have been introduced to hands-on learning about creepy crawlies, plants and working as a team in a purpose-built outdoor classroom area.

Four and five-year-olds at Wilden All Saints CE Primary School, in Stourport, have helped put together a shelter, using skills picked up during their outdoor learning sessions.

Sharon O'Connor, has been teaching 20 reception children about the natural environment surrounding the school, in WIlden Lane, and believes youngsters are benefiting from the change of scenery, since starting the classes six weeks ago.

The outdoor classroom, the idea for which came from Denmark in 2001, is kitted out with tools.

Year ones and nursery youngsters are due to start using the area and it will form part of the school's drive for Eco Schools status.
