A "GIFTED" and "remarkable" young school pupil has received an award from his golf club.

Joe Wier, 10, a pupil at Franche Community Primary School, was chosen as Wharton Park Golf Club's most improved junior player of 2007. He has been playing golf since he was four and is a member of the junior team.

Angus Hoare, the Professional Golfers Association's advanced golf professional at the club, said: "Joe has a perception I've not seen in any other junior. He plays off the men's tees and has a men's handicap of 28. He is gifted and quite remarkable for his age".

Recently, Mr Hoare ran an after school golf club where Joe helped to coach fellow pupils.

Matt Warren, PE co-ordinator at the school, said: "We are delighted that all the hard work and practice has paid off for Joe."

Wharton Park Golf Club runs junior sessions every Saturday and Sunday morning from 11am to 12.30pm. Phone 01299 405163 for more information or to book a session.
