Wyre Forest MP Mark Garnier: Voted against "a rubbish" same-sex marriage Bill.
THE big event in parliament this week was the second reading of the Marriages (Same Sex Couples) Bill – the so-called ‘Gay Marriage’ Bill.
I have written about this before in this column. This is an issue that for a number of people raises huge emotions, but for the majority – myself included – it is not something that people feel strongly about either way.
The letters I have received (over 300) have been varied with their argument and some have stuck out as key in the debate. One young man wrote to me about how he was a victim of homophobic bullying at school and it this has struck me as something that is utterly appalling. Discrimination of any sort should be absolutely eradicated but we know that, for example, women still suffer lower wages at work. That is why Labour’s Equalities Act is broadly welcome.
But this Bill was never a manifesto pledge of any party at the last election. Indeed, it never came up in the Queen’s Speech so it has had a very short gestation period.
That has meant that it has come about with very little public debate. So given that this is, for religious groups and the gay community certainly, something that is of intense interest, I felt I needed to gauge public opinion.
I felt this was important because had it been a manifesto pledge at the last election, it may have altered the outcome and without any sort of electoral mandate, I did not feel that I could just take the party line.
My first thoughts were that as long as no church was forced to do this against its will, what harm does it do? But it became very apparent that those who are practicing Christians did not feel the same. So I went out and tried to correspond with people, meet with church leaders, where I could ask the opinions of a younger generation and of people whom I know to be gay. I even used this column to seek views especially by those in favour of the proposals. Yet overwhelmingly the response came back as ambivalent to strongly against. Importantly, I found not one single person who felt that this was a pressing issue. Even in the last week, when the pro-campaigners started to up their game, the view of Wyre Forest residents was significantly against. So I voted to support how I had been asked to and voted against the Bill.
But one last postscript to these thoughts: it is a rubbish Bill. Given the quadruple lock to prevent churches being forced to undertake these ceremonies if they do not want to and the automatic exclusion of the Church of England, I am pretty certain that this will not address properly the points that it attempted to.
I suspect the gay community will be more frustrated by the limitations of the Bill when it eventually comes into force. But that is a story for another day.

Poor justification of an even poorer decision.
It seems then he thinks it is ok to not allow churches in favour, like the Quakers, the opportunity to do so. Whether the Bill was 'rubbish' in his opinion or not, this Bill so far as I understand it does not force a church to do anything against its will. Mark clearly fails to understand what the word 'equality' means or what the phrase of 'equality of opportunity' means.
Thankfully he was on the losing side - something he should start to get used to with his under-developed sense of being able to read issues and consequences.

Maybe Mark should also examine the way in which he 'put' this issue out there and the slant he placed on it, if he wonders about the responses he got nearly all coming from one viewpoint 100 to 1?

Mark's hilarious efforts to justify his slippery amoral actions are highly entertaining, it's less like an episode of 'The Thick of It' than 'Carry on Politician'. He's all over the place, the only thing we can really ascertain, along with his misunderstanding of the moral nature of volunteering in his views on the Big Society, is when it comes to ethical issues in the House he needs to sit them out. Perhaps that's why he became a Hedgefund Manager?

If a CoE vicar wants to do gay marriage, let them!
Stop dictating what people can and can't do!

With an addendum. This is a secular country that we live in. The automatic exclusion of the church of england proves just one thing. It is time to boot them out into the cold. Why are we still funding this archaic nonsense and why are church leaders so influential in Government?
This is typical Tory spin from it's newest recruit. The stupidity of earlier 'views from' now married to slick ways to get the answer he wants so he can do what he wants for him. Not for his constituents.
"Listened to my constituents". First bloody time, you utter hypocrite. Forests screams out at me here and I'm sure a longer list of issues where you have gone against your voters wishes will appear by others below. Please leave this district just as soon as possible and close the door behind you.

I think our politicians need to get their priorities right. If our country was back on an even keel, economically, anti-social behavioiur issues and crime were under control and the issues in the NHS/welfare state resolved, then I might be prepared to condone our public servants spending their time (and tax payers money) debating this issue.
The simple truth of the matter is that the issues I have referred to have still to be resolved and it beggars belief that our policitians consider the gay marriage issue to be of a higher priority. It rather reminds me of the phrase 're-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic'.
Politicians should get a grip and get their priorities right.

In any case, just remember it has provided a nice little sideshow for a Government in crisis trying to deflect from their frankly inempt handling of the economy, and destruction of both the welfare state and NHS. This, as they seek to look after the interests of their mates in the Banks and international big business. Waffling on about the EU was part of that sideshow too.
Hopefully, all of this will now start to expose this Government for what they are, along with what our MP really stands for - which is himself.
