AN APPRENTICE at Wyre Forest District Council has been awarded Kidderminster College’s Apprentice Student of the Year award.

Lindsey Poyner, 22, began her course at the college in September last year and has since gone on to achieve a NVQ Level 2 qualification in Business and Administration.

Every year, Kidderminster College nominates students for the award that have shown enthusiasm throughout their studies and developed their skills and this year Lindsey received her award for “consistent outstanding work and achievement”.

Debbie Woolams, college tutor, said: “I nominated Lindsey for this award because she has always produced a high standard of work as part of her Level 2 Certificate in Business and Administration.

“She has been an excellent student, always meeting deadlines and showing a professional attitude as well as being highly motivated, making her very deserving of this award.”

Lindsey started working at the district council in 2013 as a Water Management Support Officer apprentice while attending college one day a week. She was now progressed onto level 3 of her course and is continuing her employment at the council.

She said: “I am really pleased to have received this award. I enjoy being able to learn on the job whilst gaining valuable life skills.

“My colleagues have been supportive throughout and I feel privileged to be part of this apprenticeship scheme.”

Jennie Short, head of business and development at Kidderminster College, praised the district council for taking on its apprentices and supporting the scheme.

“The great thing about being an apprentice is that you can earn while you learn as well as gaining skills that will support them in the workplace, while employers have the opportunity to gain just the right skills for the job they want doing,” she said.

“I would encourage any companies interested in employing an apprentice to contact the college and benefit from the wide-ranging support we can offer.”

District councillor Anne Hingley, cabinet member for health, well-being and housing, said: “On behalf of the council, we would like to congratulate Lindsey on her excellent achievement.”
