It was the trend story that eclipsed all others in the spring/summer collections. Designers took a hippy trip back in time, their muses the bohemian babes of the Seventies.

Backstage, the hair and make-up teams set to work designing looks that reflected the era's coolest icons - Jerry Hall and Chrissie Hynde among them.

Seventies beauty, it turns out, focuses firmly on two features. Sultry, soft focus eye make-up is key, be it pastel, smoky purple or glitter-encrusted, while hippy hair should be anything but 'done'.

That may sound like a lot of colour, but these are looks you can easily adapt for everyday use. Here's how to achieve boho beauty with a few modern essentials...

CYAN EYES

Jerry Hall in her Seventies heyday was the inspiration for the chalky, aqua eye look created at Emanuel Ungaro.

MAC Senior Artist Rebecca Butterworth explains how it was done: "Clearwater Pro Longwear Paint Pot was blended all over the eyelid and around the lower lash line, then a mixture of Hi-Def Cyan and White Pigments [£17 each] was pressed on top with a flat eyeshadow brush, to create an intense, bright, matte finish.

"This look is so beautiful and easy to adapt for real life, by just turning down the intensity on the colours. Wash Clearwater Pro Longwear Paint Pot from the lash line to the crease of the eye and blend out. Apply a black or brown pencil into the lash roots, then add lots of Haute & Naughty Lash Mascara to define and open up eyes."

PURPLE GAZE

Make-up legend Charlotte Tilbury and Benefit head make-up and trend artist Lisa Potter-Dixon were inspired by the hibiscus florals in Matthew Williamson's collection, using lipstick to create a gorgeous glam effect on the eyes.

Potter-Dixon explains how to get the look: "Mix Fling Thing and Dare Me Hydra-Smooth Lip Colour on the back of your hand then pat onto the eyelids and blend through with a blending brush.

"Pat Always a Bridesmaid Creaseless Cream Shadow into the inner corner of the eye and centre of the lid. Finish with lashings of They're Real Mascara [£19.50] on upper and lower lashes."

ALL THAT GLITTER

"A Seventies groupie trying to emulate her rock icons", was the explanation for the glam rock glitter eyes at House of Holland.

Rebecca Butterworth takes us through the look: "Blacktrack Fluidline [£15.50] was applied as a straight liner all along top and bottom lash lines, then the rock and roll feel was intensified by lining upper and lower waterlines with Feline Eye Kohl [£14].

"Glitter needs something to stick to, and Mixing Medium Eyeliner is a great product to do this. It's a clear gel that you can use on its own as a crease-free base for glitter or metallic eyeshadows. Paint a thin layer onto the eyelid and press PRO Silver Glitter [£17] on top.

"If glitter isn't your thing, try recreating this look with a soft silver shadow in place of the glitter. Silver Ring Eyeshadow is a great alternative."

WOODSTOCK WAVES

The so-called 'Woodstock wave' - softly tousled locks - was seen at Marchesa, Peter Pilotto and Osman.

"It's great for all hair lengths and fun for festivals, with a laid-back feel," says Aleysha Mawani of Athena salon (www.athenalondon.co.uk). "Prep hair with Julien Farel Vitamin Smooth to decrease frizz and create shine, then apply volumising mousse before blow-drying to keep the style in, as we won't be using hairspray to set - the more natural and loose the waves the better," explains Mawani.

"Wrap sections of hair around a medium curling tong. Alternate each section to wrap a different way, then twist the front sections away from the face. After all your hair is tonged, run your fingers through or gently go over with a hairdryer to loosen the curls."

BOHO BRAIDS

At Vera Wang, models did the hippy triple: a violet Seventies eye, Woodstock waves AND hidden braids.

Sam Burnett of Hare & Bone (www.hareandbone.co.uk) explains how to recreate the style: "Use KMS California Add Volume Styling Foam on towel-dried hair, then spray Hair Play Sea Salt Spray evenly throughout, to add texture. Blast dry then use jumbo tongs to create loose waves with two-inch sections.

"Next, take a dividing section from the top of one ear across to the other and clip out of the way. Split the remaining hair in two and plait each section from the top, bringing the hair over your shoulder as you go.

"Secure the ends of the hair and gently pull horizontally at the braid, to loosen it and create that messy feel. Finally, unclip the hair you sectioned away, shake out the waves and your look is complete."

RECKLESS ROCK CHICKS

At Tom Ford, the glam groupie girls stomping down the catwalk rocked major bedhead hairdos.

"Ultra edgy and rocky, it's all about keeping it sexy and undone," says Jake Unger of HOB Salons (www.hobsalons.com), explaining how to achieve this insouciant look.

"Apply a generous amount of Sebastian Mousse Forte and roughly blow-dry hair. When dry, apply more mousse and dry hair again, with your fingers rather than a brush, keeping a heavy side parting in place. The double application will help recreate the full, matte, textured, 'over processed' looking hair, as seen on the catwalk.

"Once completely dry, spray Sebastian Trilliance into the hair, while holding the hairdryer on the hair too. This will also enhance texture. Finally, fix into place with Sebastian Shaper Fierce Hairspray [£9.95]."

TRIED AND TESTED

:: Keeley Bolger plucks up the courage to tackle some rogue chin hairs with a bendy new device

"After my toddler niece told me I had a beard, I was very happy to test out the Tweezy, which claims to help rid facial hair with a simple bend of the stick.

"Once you've twisted the Tweezy into a U shape, you place it against your skin and twist the ends to remove the hair. It's a bit like threading, except the Tweezy traps hairs between the spring coils. Although effective, it does take a while to get to grips with it, and you'll probably need to use some tweezers to pluck out any stragglers.

"But on the whole, it's easy to use and didn't sting, or leave red blotches, like waxing or threading can."
