A look at canine diet
6:00am Saturday 4th January 2014 in Lifestyle
Dogs are omnivorous scavengers at the carnivore end of the spectrum. The dog in the wild has evolved to eat whatever was available in times of plenty or in scarcer times which means that their digestive system is able to cope with a wide variety of different food sources.
Dogs can actually live on a diet which is exclusively vegetarian; although maybe not entirely happily so most dog food available contains a proportion of meat. However whatever the canine is fed he always requires sufficient levels of protein, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins and minerals in the diet in order to reach and maintain optimum health.
Food is at the heart of health. If you eat poor quality food, deficient in nutrition, it becomes more challenging to remain healthy. Conditions and diseases can often rear their ugly heads when there is not enough quality nutrition in the diet. When the immune system is compromised your dog is far more likely to contract other health related problems and is easy prey to passing epidemics.
When choosing a food, it is best to make sure you are feeding one designed for your dog. Special formulations balance energy, protein, vitamins and minerals and feeds which cater specifically for puppies, junior dogs, small dogs, large dogs, active dogs, senior dogs, obese dogs are available on the market. Although it is best to follow the feeding instructions detailed on the feed bag/box, these feeding levels are a guide. Always feed according to your dog’s condition, as every dog is an individual.
When changing your dog's food it is important to switch gradually, as this is kinder to the dogs' digestive system and limits the risk of a reaction to a new feed.
Some dogs may also benefit from additional supplements in their diet to achieve ideal health and wellbeing.
