THE atmosphere was lively for a Saturday lunchtime at Birmingham's Bar and Block restaurant.

There was plenty of laughter from various tables and it was obvious the restaurant's new "bottomless Prosecco" offer was being enjoyed by a lot of customers.

The table of 12 women by us polished off 30 bottles in 90 minutes and were having a roaring old time. At one stage I was worried they would devour the waiter let alone the meat he was bringing to the table.

The Beefeater urban m-eatery on Waterloo Street offers the best of their out-of-town restaurants in the middle of the city and if you are a red blooded meat eating Prosecco drinker then this has to be the perfect place for you.

For £15 from 9am until 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, diners can enjoy endless glasses of the fizzy favourite when ordering from the menu.

The staff take a photo on a rather cool Polaroid camera and put the time on it and then for the next 90 minutes you can drink as much Prosecco as you want.

Simple.

Those feeling a little more delicate can help themselves to bottomless hot drinks and juices at the self-service bar, also included in the offer. Not that I saw anyone doing that.

And you can keep the photo, as a momento of what you looked like sober.

The damsel and I shared the Ploughmans Block (£10.95) which included a homemade Scotch egg, sausage roll, Cheddar cheese, thinly sliced salt beef, a wedge of pork pie, marinated dill pickles, chargrilled red peppers, piccalilli and crusty bread It was the first time I'd eaten a warm Scotch egg and it was a culinary revelation, I feel if I have been missing out on something all my life.

I'm now kind of addicted to them, I've tried warming the ones you get in petrol stations up in a mircowave but well it just is not the same.

The yolk does not run for a start.

For the main courses it was only ever going to be meat, because Bar and Block do it so well, and with so many pictures of cows and various cuts on the walls it would be rude not to.

I had the 10oz sirloin (£18.50) which was as succulent as you could wish for, I also had a taster of the six sauces available - spicy black sauce, chimichurri, trio of peppercorn, creamy mushroom, béarnaise and blue cheese (£6).

However, the steak was so good I ended up leaving most of the sauces because it did not need anything else, I just had to remember to savour every mouthful.

The damsel went for the 10oz spiral cut fillet (£24.50) which is unique dish by Beefeater created by spiral cutting the fillet and marinating it in garlic and parsley for tenderness and flavour.

It was so good she had already arranged a return visit with her friends on Whatsapp, then again that might have been because of the bottomless Prosecco offer.

Either way, I think it is fair to say whether together or with each others friends we shall be returning to Bar and Block.
