COLDPLAY'S new single Violet Hill was downloaded by more than 600,000 people in 24 hours.
It was made available for free just after noon on April 29. In the first 12 hours 300,000 people took advantage of the freebie, which the band say is a thank you to their fans.
That figure doubled overnight as other countries logged on to coldplay.com to get the song.
Violet Hill was free for a week before being released as a proper digital single last Tuesday.
The group's forthcoming album Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends will be released on June 12.
On June 16 the group play a completely free show at London's Brixton Academy.
A week later, on June 23, they play another free show, this time in New York, at Madison Square Garden.
Go to www.coldplay.com for details on the shows or to download the song.
