Shilvock strikes for fine success

HOCKEY: Stourport Ladies moved out of the bottom three of the Investec Women’s Conference West with a vital 3-2 win at Staines.

The ladies rose out of the relegation zone after Barnes Hounslow and Ealing drew 3-3 with Bristol Firebrands.

Stourport have a slightly superior goal difference to Barnes and are level on 16 points.

Sade Gerald nearly opened the scoring but was inches away from connecting with Leanne Bennett’s teasing cross.

However, they edged ahead by half-time when Gerald ran two-thirds of of the pitch to slot home.

With player-of-the-match Sophie Harris proving a rock in defence, Stourport were starting to settle.

But the second-half proved was end-to-end affair, with Staines taking a 2-1 lead with two fortunate strikes.

However, Stourport stepped it up a gear and Sarah Cavendish restored parity with a cool finish in from the penalty spot.

Lauren Shilvock ensured the win for the visitors as she rounded the keeper and scored late on.

The seconds got the better of Bridgnorth 4-2 in the Midlands Feeder League with Fran Moss, player-of-the-match Rene Johnson and Bethan Merriman all scoring.

In the Worcestershire League Division One, Stourport’s thirds took the lead through Leanne Styzaker but ended up losing 2-1 to Tenbury.

The fourths conceded five goals in the second-half in their 6-0 defeat to Droitwich’s firsts in Division Two.

Hazel Claris scored for the fifths in Division Three as they lost 3-1 to Worcester’s fourths.
