BEWDLEY Pines GC are set to announce their youngest ever captain when Adam Garratt replaces Alan Gatland at the end of the month.

The 30-year-old will move up from the role of vice-captain when Gatland steps down on Sunday, March 31.

Garratt, whose handicap is 11, has spent five years at the club and wants to use social gatherings to bring together the club’s men’s, ladies and junior sections as well as attract younger members.

He said: “It’s a great honour to be made captain of Bewdley Pines.

“The club believe I am their youngest ever captain and I could even be the youngest golf club skipper in England.

“My aim is to bring everyone together, men’s, ladies and juniors through social events.

“Golf clubs can be very old school in some respects and I want to focus on Bewdley Pines becoming slightly more relaxed and welcoming to families.”

The captaincy gauntlet will be passed during the Alan Hobday Memorial Trophy as Garratt becomes one of the youngest club captains in England.

Director Carol Hobday is hoping the appointment of a youthful new skipper will help change the image of golf clubs and attract more families.

She said: “Clubs are always looking for new members and we all want younger people to come on board.

“It’s not easy, people in their 30s have lots of pressures such as jobs and family but we’re hoping Adam’s appointment will help.”
