ROSS Moorecroft made a mockery of the tough conditions to win Cleobury Mortimer’s men’s double roll-up tournament.

Despite some awful weather in the run-up to the weekend, the greenkeepers of Cleobury worked miracles to get the course playable.

Ian Orme finished third with 39 points, and the ever-consistent Josh Rowbotham once again shot 41 points. Both players will see a sizeable cut for general play with those great scores.

However, no-one could get near the man of the moment, Moorecroft, who triumphed to shoot his best ever score around Cleobury of 81 gross to finish with a huge 47 points.

He said: “I hit a lot of fairways today and putted really consistently on the greens that were rolling really well, considering the rain. I am really enjoying life as a Cleobury member and am looking to kick on and win more during 2014.”

l Clubs across Worcestershire are to be given a helping hand to support the drive to encourage more young people into the sport.

The Worcestershire and Herefordshire County Golf Partnership has teamed up with the Golf Foundation to host a junior conference next month.

The event – which is open to all clubs in the county – will provide valuable information and advice on how to create a welcoming environment for young people to enjoy their golf.

The conference takes place at Kings Norton Golf Club on Wednesday, February 12 (5.30pm) and it is hoped that both golf professionals and the volunteer junior organisers will attend.

Development officer Alan Beard said: “This is an ideal opportunity for those involved in junior golf to further develop their club’s own section.”
